About The Position

The Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County (“BXDA”) is charged with the twin goals of ensuring public safety and striving for equal justice for the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community. By “Pursuing Justice with Integrity,” the BXDA places a focus on assistance for crime victims while simultaneously ensuring fairness to defendants. Moreover, the BXDA aims to balance the need to seek appropriate punishment for certain crimes while recognizing when punitive measures do not adequately advance justice. By recognizing these significant distinctions and acting accordingly, BXDA has established a standard of excellence in the representation of the Bronx community at large, which continues to grow stronger every day. In furtherance of this mission, the BXDA seeks an experienced and enthusiastic Trial Preparation Assistant in the Investigation Division - Rikers Island Prosecutions to aid in all aspects of case preparation from intake to final disposition.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree preferred or a high school diploma with four (4) years of work experience in a law firm, governmental agency, civic or community organization.
  • A valid New York State driver’s license with a minimum of two (2) years of driving experience is required and must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Discretion and integrity to work on highly confidential investigations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with general court services and functions.
  • A VALID NEW YORK STATE DRIVER'S LICENSE WITH A MINIMUM OF TWO (2) YEARS OF DRIVING EXPERIENCE IN AND OUTSIDE THE FIVE (5) BOROUGHS IS REQUIRED AND MUST BE MAINTAINED FOR THE DURATION OF YOUR EMPLOYMENT.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with and acquire documents from other agencies such as NYPD, ACS, OCME, and hospitals or wherever documents are located.
  • Compile, analyze, reproduce case documents and ensure proper redaction of documentation.
  • Draft legal documents such as Motion Responses, Legal Memorandum, Search Warrants, Subpoenas, and Orders to Produce.
  • Serve Takeout Orders and Orders to Produce on Department of Correction.
  • Perform legal research
  • Notifying police personnel and civilians to appear when necessary.
  • Consult with Criminal and Supreme Court Clerks to obtain certificates of dispositions when necessary.
  • Engage in witness contact and communication.
  • Secure corroborating affidavits.
  • Obtain and evaluate computer and phone records, including social media communications and cell site information.
  • Secure, listen to, and transcribe phone calls from the Department of Correction.
  • Perform all bureau related duties as needed or assigned, including but not limited to, drafting or typing of correspondence and confidential documents, updating computer-based tracking systems, record keeping, filing, and document preparation.
  • Travel outside the office to other locations and agencies.
  • Preparation of discovery for defense attorneys.
  • Providing duplication of digital recordings regarding surveillance and/or defendants statements.
  • All other duties as assigned.
