About The Position

This position involves learning the fundamentals of water and/or wastewater treatment plant operation. Depending on the license level (Trainee, C, B, or A), the responsibilities range from performing routine work under supervision to operating pumps, motors, and other equipment to treat water/wastewater. The role requires monitoring meters, changing charts, keeping log sheets, preparing operating reports, taking samples for chemical analysis, performing routine chemical analysis, reporting equipment breakdowns, participating in minor repairs, performing custodial and maintenance duties, and responding to citizen complaints. The job involves shift work and may include an odd work week.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old as required by Florida statutes.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's license with acceptable driving record is required.
  • Knowledge of basic math and chemistry skills.
  • Ability to learn methods and practices of water or wastewater treatment.
  • Ability to learn the standards and normal operation procedures applicable to treatment.
  • Ability to learn the functions/mechanics of pumps and other plant equipment.
  • Ability to read meters and charts accurately.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to perform simple chemical analysis and to adjust treatment processes to treatment volume.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Requires lift up to 85 pounds with assistance, and/or up to 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to perform heavy manual labor work occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate verbally both in person and over the phone.
  • Ability to stand for sustained periods of time.
  • Ability to stoop (bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist).
  • Ability to talk (expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word).
  • Visual acuity to operate motor vehicles, include close vision, distant vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain and work in unimproved areas under construction during utility installations and maintenance tasks, including wet trenches and other adverse situations on a daily basis.
  • Ability to climb (ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles).
  • Ability to enter confined spaces such as valve pits, tanks.
  • Ability to feel (perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips).

  • Ability to handle (picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand).
  • Must be able to use hand and power tools, laboratory equipment and safety equipment required for performance of assigned duties.

  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Ability to kneel (bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees).
  • Ability to lift (raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position).
  • Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.

Responsibilities

  • Regulates rate of flow to and from water/wastewater plants.
  • Regulates feed equipment and mixes chemicals as needed.
  • Operates pumps, motors, and other equipment in order to properly treat the water/wastewater.
  • Reads meters, changes charts, and keeps log sheets.
  • Prepares operating reports.
  • Takes samples for chemical analysis.
  • Performs routine chemical analysis.
  • Reports equipment breakdowns to supervision.
  • Participates in making minor repairs to mechanical equipment.
  • Performs routine custodial and maintenance duties at facility.
  • Monitors telephone and radio; responds to and reports citizen complaints to higher level employees.
  • Performs plant operational and/or maintenance duties as required to promote productivity and efficiency.
