About The Position

This position involves learning the fundamentals of water and/or wastewater treatment plant operation. After instruction and orientation, the trainee will be expected to perform routine work as performed by a certified plant operator. Work involves shift work and may involve an odd work week. The role requires regulating the rate of flow to and from water/wastewater plants, regulating feed equipment, and mixing chemicals as needed. Operators run pumps, motors, and other equipment to properly treat water/wastewater, read meters, change charts, and keep log sheets. They also prepare operating reports, take samples for chemical analysis, perform routine chemical analysis, and report equipment breakdowns to supervision. Participation in minor repairs to mechanical equipment and routine custodial and maintenance duties at the facility are also part of the job. Additionally, operators monitor telephone and radio, respond to and report citizen complaints, and perform plant operational and/or maintenance duties as required to promote productivity and efficiency.

Requirements

Knowledge of basic math and chemistry skills.
Ability to learn methods and practices of water or wastewater treatment.
Ability to learn the standards and normal operation procedures applicable to treatment.
Ability to learn the functions/mechanics of pumps and other plant equipment.
Ability to read meters and charts accurately.
Ability to maintain records.
Ability to perform simple chemical analysis and adjust treatment processes to treatment volume.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required.
Must be at least 18 years old.
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's license is mandatory.
Subject to emergency call-out during off duty hours and on weekends as required.
This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances.
Requires lift up to 85 pounds with assistance, and/or up to 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to perform heavy manual labor work occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
Ability to speak and communicate verbally both in person and over the phone.
Ability to stand for sustained periods of time.
Ability to stoop.
Ability to talk.
Visual acuity to operate motor vehicles, including close vision, distant vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Ability to walk on uneven terrain and work in unimproved areas under construction during utility installations and maintenance tasks, including wet trenches and other adverse situations on a daily basis.
Ability to climb, with emphasis on body agility.
Ability to enter confined spaces such as valve pits, tanks, infrequently to perform assigned duties.
Ability to feel attributes of objects by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
Ability to grasp objects with fingers and palm.
Ability to handle, pick, hold, or otherwise work, primarily with the whole hand.
Ability to use hand and power tools, laboratory equipment and safety equipment.
Ability to hear at normal speaking levels and receive detailed information through oral communication.

Nice To Haves

A completed state-approved correspondence course and a passing score on the State of Florida Water or Wastewater Class "C" Operator exam.
Possess either a Class A, Class B or Class C Water License issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Regulations.
