This position involves learning the fundamentals of water and/or wastewater treatment plant operation. After instruction and orientation, the trainee will be expected to perform routine work as performed by a certified plant operator. Work involves shift work and may involve an odd work week. The role requires regulating the rate of flow to and from water/wastewater plants, regulating feed equipment, and mixing chemicals as needed. Operators run pumps, motors, and other equipment to properly treat water/wastewater, read meters, change charts, and keep log sheets. They also prepare operating reports, take samples for chemical analysis, perform routine chemical analysis, and report equipment breakdowns to supervision. Participation in minor repairs to mechanical equipment and routine custodial and maintenance duties at the facility are also part of the job. Additionally, operators monitor telephone and radio, respond to and report citizen complaints, and perform plant operational and/or maintenance duties as required to promote productivity and efficiency.
