About The Position

The Treating Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining treating equipment, including boilers and chemical handling systems. This role involves ensuring proper chemical treatment processes, performing routine maintenance, and adhering to safety protocols for handling hazardous materials. The operator will also be responsible for record-keeping, waste management, and responding to spills. Responsibilities include applying restricted use pesticides, operating and maintaining creosote storage tanks, and managing the wastewater collection and treatment system. The operator must also be prepared to act as a first responder for hazardous material spills and report any releases to the appropriate authorities. General plant housekeeping and monitoring of runoff controls are also key duties. Receiving and offloading hazardous material shipments by rail and truck is part of the role, requiring safe handling practices and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators.

Requirements

  • Able to read, understand and perform computer data entry of all related paperwork.
  • Able to read and understand gauges and recording charts within the treating area.
  • Understands boiler operation and maintenance.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Possesses sufficient physical strength to handle heavy mechanical equipment like cylinder doors.
  • Able to wear respirator.
  • Willingness to work outdoors.

Responsibilities

  • Obeys "General Rules for All Employees".
  • Checks "Trams Loaded" report to make sure proper charge is plugged in cylinder.
  • Gives each charge a number.
  • Verifies correct cubic feet.
  • Verifies correct tank readings.
  • Checks water meters (on boulton charges).
  • Checks vacuum (on boulton charges to customer specifications).
  • Ensures proper initial air pressure.
  • Ensures proper temperature (on air dry charges to customer specification).
  • Ensures proper temperature (on Boulton charges to customer specification).
  • Checks Pressure (all charges to customer specification).
  • Takes Boulton charges off early using a drop-off method.
  • Ensures that all charge reports are filled out properly.
  • Attaches chart with each charge.
  • Performs routine maintenance on all treating equipment including vacuum, fill, pressure, unloading, gaskets, and packings.
  • Unloads and transfers chemicals.
  • Operates and maintains the boiler and keeps required records.
  • Lights off and shuts down boiler.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Applies "restricted use" pesticides as an "applicator technician".
  • Cleans door pit and places hazardous wastes into proper containers.
  • Operates and maintains creosote storage tanks.
  • Operates, adjusts, and maintains wastewater collection and treatment system.
  • Responds at a first responder operations level to non-incidental spills of Creosote Solution, other hazardous chemicals, and hazardous waste.
  • Responsible for reporting all reportable spills or releases to the Plant Management.
  • If plant management not available reports to the proper authorities (NRC, LEPC, Fire District) within the required time frames.
  • Performs general plant housekeeping to ensure Treating and effluent areas are clean and free of debris.
  • Visually monitors rainwater and snowmelt runoff from the drip tracks and other treating areas to ensure that runoff controls are operating correctly.
  • Receives and offloads shipments of hazardous material by rail and truck.
  • Works safely with and around hazardous materials including flammable or combustible liquids.
  • Always uses correct PPE.
  • Wears respirator for certain routine activities and may have to wear one during an emergency.
