About The Position

Traveling Assistant Camp Directors are adaptable, people-first leaders who support multiple camp sites across a region, stepping in when Assistant Camp Directors or instructors are out. Support when sites are short-staffed, or when extra operational support is needed. Reporting to the Field Program Manager and partnering closely with on-site Camp Directors, you’ll help ensure smooth daily operations, strong team culture, and a joyful, safe, and inclusive camp experience for campers and staff alike.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in K-8 education, child development, or related work/education
  • 6+ months of leadership or supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, or supervising children in groups of 15+
  • Availability for full-time camp work (4–8 consecutive weeks, depending on location)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with enthusiasm and urgency
  • Willingness to complete pre-camp requirements (background checks, onboarding, training, CPR/First Aid)
  • Must be 18 years of age by May 1, 2026

Responsibilities

  • Independently direct, plan activities, train, and supervise the Extended Care program (3:00–6:00 PM) at assigned sites, serving as the leader of after-camp programming while traveling between locations.
  • Create a safe, fun, and engaging environment by balancing camper safety, operational needs, and staff support across varying site contexts.
  • Maintain staffing ratios, releasing camp counselors and interns as needed.
  • Collaborate with Camp Directors across assigned sites to ensure a safe and joyful program, completing daily operational tasks and acting as "manager on duty" in the absence of on-site leadership.
  • Flexibly assist with managing camp rotations, covering staffing gaps, and stepping in to lead camper groups or facilitate curriculum as needed across multiple locations.
  • Lead by example by actively participating in camp activities, chants, songs, and skits to promote a vibrant camp spirit and exemplary customer service.
  • Partner with Camp Directors to support, coach, and motivate camp teams, with a particular emphasis on mentoring and managing Summer Interns.
  • Supervise and assign daily tasks to staff, coordinate coverage during staff breaks, and oversee responsibilities during Extended Care while providing consistent leadership during travel assignments.
  • Effectively use camp systems, such as Salesforce and Camp Planner, to support essential administrative tasks related to family registration, attendance, and communication across sites.
  • Ensure continuity and accuracy of administrative processes when covering multiple camps or stepping into temporary leadership roles.
  • Use creative problem-solving and strong prioritization skills to balance daily tasks while maintaining camper safety and program quality.
  • Continue leadership development through ongoing coaching, mentorship, and training from camp leaders, building a foundation for future leadership opportunities at Galileo and beyond.
  • Complete paid online training focused on building your leadership and operations management skillset.
  • Participate in in-person training and setup days: one prep day for camp leadership and two camp setup days for all staff.
