About The Position

The Traveling Aircraft Mechanic II (Sheet Metal) performs the full range of aircraft maintenance with primary responsibility for sheet metal and structural repair. This role involves manufacturing and fabricating aircraft sheet metal parts, panels, and doors from various serviced aircraft. The mechanic will determine the type and extent of repair or replacement required, select appropriate materials and repair methods, and then lay out, cut, form, join, assemble, and install items. This includes developing parts and templates from prints, drawings, or original parts to produce repair parts that are not readily available. The position requires reading and analyzing work requests and applicable specifications. The mechanic will also be responsible for ensuring finished aircraft parts meet quality standards for soundness, strength, and appearance in accordance with specifications.

Requirements

Valid FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) License, two (2) years aviation maintenance experience, three (3) years rotary wing aircraft experience, two (2) years’ experience on assigned Mission Design Series (MDS) aircraft.
If no A&P License, shall have three (3) years aviation maintenance experience, three (3) years rotary wing aircraft experience and two (2) years on assigned MDS aircraft.
All experience must be within the five (5) most recent years.
Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work site.
Must provide own tool and toolbox. All tools must be shadowed and etched with PID.
Must be available to Travel up to 75% of the time, as operationally required.
Thorough knowledge of aircraft sheet metal and structural repair and modification.
Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures, and replacement of parts.
Basic knowledge of electrical theory and a thorough knowledge of aircraft tools including test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes, and shears.
Working knowledge of aircraft logbooks, military technical publications, and maintenance data systems.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical manuals.

Responsibilities

Performs the full range of aircraft maintenance with primary responsibility for sheet metal and structural repair.
Manufactures and fabricates aircraft sheet metal parts, panels, doors, etc., from various serviced aircraft.
Determines type and extent of repair or replacement required, type of material and repair methods to use.
Lays out, cuts, forms, joins, assembles and installs items.
Develops parts and templates from prints, drawings, or original parts to produce repair parts that are not readily available.
Plans, layouts, cuts, forms, shapes and assembles complex sheet metal items.
Uses developed patterns/layouts, prefabricated templates or old part as a sample, scribes outline on sheet metal and cuts out scribed part using shears, Do-All saw and turret punch.
Forms metal using cornice brake, punch press, drill press, and similar metal forming tools.
Finishes and smooths edges of metal sheet after cutting and assembles component sheet metal piece with rivets, screws, nuts and bolts.
Aligns, drills and reams material for installation of various types of riveting and taking precautions to protect dissimilar metals.
Applies necessary protective compounds, special insulating protective tape, plastic cement, fiberglass resins, etc.
Independently lays out template, transcribes information from template and manufactures double contour parts with configuration in several planes.
Assembles and fastens fabricated parts by installing bolts, rivets, screws and/or seaming.
Develops and draws working sketches showing view, section, or profile.
Ensures finished aircraft parts meet quality standards for soundness, strength, appearance in accordance with specification and/or similar requirements.
Leads small teams and prioritizes workload to meet mission requirements.
