About The Position

This position requires a Travel Registered Nurse (RN) with at least 2 years of experience in Labor & Delivery (L&D). The role involves performing an age-specific plan of care for a designated group of patients using the nursing process. The RN will collaborate with physicians and other health team members to coordinate procedures and treatments, utilizing leadership skills and clinical judgment in patient care and directing the patient care unit team.

Requirements

  • 2+ Years of L&D RN experience required.
  • BLS, ACLS, NRP, NCC-EFM and Intermediate AWHONN Required.
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing, required.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State and/or Connecticut, required.
  • BLS required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the patient’s physiologic health status, including conducting patient interviews, explaining policies and procedures, reviewing charts, and answering questions. Assesses gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and neurological health status, determining mobility, sensory deficits, prostheses use, and skin condition, and adjusting the plan of care as appropriate. Assesses level of pain and pain management. Communicates and documents patient’s physiologic health status and plan of care.
  • Assesses patient’s psychosocial health status, eliciting perception of medical/nursing care and expectation of care. Determines coping mechanisms, knowledge level, and ability to comprehend. Identifies cultural/ethnic requirements to reduce anxiety and ensure patient satisfaction. Communicates and documents psychological status and care plan, including support group, counseling services, and social services.
  • Identifies patient outcomes by developing criteria for measurement, identifying actual/potential patient problems, and identifying patient’s need for teaching based on psychosocial and developmental assessment. Develops patient outcome statement(s) and establishes individualized patient goals.
  • Formulates the plan of care and establishes priorities necessary to achieve expected outcomes. Identifies care activities and establishes priorities. Coordinates the cost-effective use of supplies, equipment, and medication. Documents the plan of care and collaborates with physicians and other health team members.
  • Implements the plan of care by maintaining constant vigilance over patient care to ensure safety precautions/needs are followed (e.g., side rails up, call lights and bedside stand within reach). Exercises professional skills related to the plan of care. Reassesses patients as needed and appropriately revises the plan of care. Correctly administers prescribed treatments and uses necessary equipment. Provides emotional support to patients and significant others. Applies scientific principles safely, timely, and efficiently. Makes accurate observations of patient’s conditions during treatments/procedures, reporting and recording as appropriate. Keeps accurate documentation of patient’s treatment, activity, and condition, as well as patient’s responses to interventions. Uses appropriate documentation methods. Acts rapidly and effectively during emergencies. Provides a calm, quiet, restful atmosphere. Communicates effectively with the patient’s family or caretakers. Participates in discharge planning and coordinates referrals. Provides discharge instructions.
  • Evaluates care provided for patient outcomes, demonstrating ability to measure effectiveness and documenting the same. Performs variance analysis related to outcome data for performance improvement. Designs, implements, and evaluates systems to improve care. Keeps accurate documentation and uses appropriate documentation methods.
  • Collaborates with other care team members in planning and carrying out treatment regimens and provides direction to other team members. Collaborates with the appropriate physician on the patient’s plan of care. Accurately interprets and implements treatment regimens. Assists the Physician during treatments/diagnostic procedures. Keeps the Patient Care Manager/designee and/or physician abreast of changes in patient’s condition/treatments. Uses clinical judgment in delegating assignments to Patient Care Associates, Support Care Associates, and Clerical Service Associates, ensuring timely completion.
  • Performs grade I-IV Decubitus Care, including preventive skin care measures, applying simple dressings with aseptic technique, applying warm & cold compresses, performing irrigations, and other necessary skin care procedures.
  • Administers medications correctly and safely, correctly identifying medication, action, dosage, side effects, and implications for the patient. Meets standard on medication administration examination. Demonstrates preparation of local solutions and I.V. drips. Administers and documents medication correctly. Administers IVP medication per department policy. Educates patients and significant others related to drug and food interactions.
  • Participates in patient and family education by explaining the patient’s condition, communicating assessment data, recognizing and utilizing teaching opportunities and resources, providing for early discharge planning and appropriate referrals, and evaluating the effectiveness of teaching.
  • Performs related duties as required.
