This role involves direct patient contact and frequent interaction with nurses, radiology techs, desk staff, and door attendants. The primary responsibility is to transport patients, visitors, and patient-related items safely and efficiently. This includes providing detailed verbal communication to care team members during patient handoffs, confirming patient identification, and managing transport requests via computer or phone. The role requires safe operation of various motorized patient transport equipment, disinfection of equipment after each use, and requesting maintenance as needed. Employees will also perform wheelchair roundups. This position demands significant physical activity, including standing/walking 10-12 miles per 8-hour shift, and frequently pushing/pulling patients up to 200 pounds, occasionally exceeding 350 pounds. Transporters will move patients requiring specialized equipment such as oxygen, IV pumps, and wound vacs, and must partner with the healthcare team to ensure patient safety and proper documentation. Adherence to medical isolation precautions, protocols, and PPE requirements is essential, confirmed through Epic information and care team consultation. Employees may also perform lateral slide transfers with assistive devices and occasionally assist with ceiling lift slings. Patient and visitor assistance is provided as needed. Critical care patients may require transport with Nurse and/or Respiratory Therapist accompaniment, during which the transporter must monitor the patient's condition and recognize changes that may necessitate a medical emergency call. The role requires awareness of the patient's medical condition during transport. A minimum of 80 hours of on-the-job training is necessary.
