This position is responsible for the safe transportation of patients, specimens, supplies, medication, film, records, equipment and miscellaneous items. The role involves performing transportation duties independently with little or no direct supervision, safely transporting patients and any supplies/items as directed, evaluating patient's transportation needs, and requesting additional help if needed before moving patients. The transporter must understand and comply with current National Patient Safety Goals, understand correct patient identifiers, and follow proper hand sanitizing procedures. They will use proper lifting techniques when moving patients and proper BSI technique when handling and transporting specimens/medications. The position requires accepting direction from nursing staff for patient care guidance and utilizing the appropriate process to notify floor staff when taking a patient off the floor. Understanding the process for Lab Courier, delivering blood and specimens, is also a key responsibility. Additionally, the role includes performing department maintenance duties to ensure a clean and efficient department, maintaining equipment, ensuring patient transportation equipment is in proper working order, and properly tagging and reporting defective equipment. Storing transportation equipment in designated areas when not in use, maintaining a neat patient environment, and handling linen appropriately are also part of the duties. The transporter will participate in assigned maintenance tasks such as cleaning transportation equipment and filling portable O2 tanks. They are expected to use time, supplies, and other resources productively to promote responsive and cost-effective care, completing care while conserving resources and preventing waste of supplies. Work is to be completed within the assigned shift, using time effectively in locating wheelchairs and stretchers. Overtime is to be used only as requested by a Manager or lead staff. The position requires demonstrating the ability to organize and prioritize work with changes as directed. The transporter performs support functions of the medical imaging and treatment services departments to ensure patient expectations and needs are met, maintaining and coordinating patient flow to ensure efficient and expedient patient care. Maintaining and ensuring a safe environment for patients and personnel by following all infection control policies and procedures concerning patient contact, specimen handling, and equipment usage is crucial. The role requires showing courtesy, effectiveness, and discretion when dealing with physicians, guests, and other hospital personnel, and demonstrating a practical problem-solving approach to patient moving and handling issues. Finally, the transporter must demonstrate skills to promote patient and staff safety through the appropriate use of lift equipment.
