About The Position

This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV in the Davidson County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Position will also serve as lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic and erosion control devices, clearing of right-of-way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. Position will operate various pieces of equipment, including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Requirements

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking and hearing
Ability to be exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment
Must be at least 21 years of age to transport inmates
Must legally operate a motor vehicle
Possession of a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement, OR obtain NC CDL within 360 days of hire
High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Criminal history check required for inmate transport
Completion of necessary training and orientation for inmate transport
Pre-employment drug testing required
Completion and signing of release form (ALCDRG-01) and background statement (ALCDRG-06)
Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation
Safety-toed shoes required

Nice To Haves

Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper
Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew
Experience with one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
Experience in snow and ice removal operation
