About The Position

This is a Transportation Worker III position in the Davidson County Maintenance Unit. The role involves a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and road features. Responsibilities include pipe installation, shoulder and ditch maintenance, asphalt pavement repair, installation of traffic control devices, installation of erosion control devices, and operating various pieces of construction equipment, hand, and power tools. The position will also respond to emergency situations such as traffic accidents, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies. The employee will operate equipment including a backhoe, track hoe, track loader, skid steer, and dump truck. The role requires working in extreme environmental conditions and at highway construction sites with hazards from heavy equipment and traffic. Additional duties include reading and interpreting plans, determining resource needs, making adjustments to plans for field conditions, ensuring safety standards, daily documentation of work, responding to public inquiries, and attending training to maintain certifications and stay updated on regulations. The employee must be able to safely lift and carry 50 lbs and wear safety-toed shoes. This position is responsible for transporting inmates for work detail, which requires obtaining an inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety, involving a criminal history check, necessary training, orientation, and being at least 21 years of age. The selected applicant must legally operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current CDL on the date of hire, or obtaining the NC CDL within 360 days of hire through on-the-job training and meeting Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations is required. Pre-employment drug testing and a post-offer employment evaluation are mandatory.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR ability to obtain the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age to transport inmates.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Must wear safety-toed shoes.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
  • Experience in shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct the daily activities of a work crew.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.

Responsibilities
