Requirements

  • High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years
  • No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years
  • Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position.
  • As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
  • Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely operate at least two pieces of equipment (bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, forklift, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, Athey loader, “A” boom mower, sweeper, pan) in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials; snow and ice operations; compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris.
  • Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks, and litter pickup.
  • Installing traffic and erosion control devices, drainage/ditch maintenance, pipe and drainage structure installation, and flagging operations.
  • Perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor.
  • Work requires ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and exposure to extreme temperature conditions.
  • Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly and exerting up up to 100lbs of force occasionally.
  • Position is subject to emergency call back and may require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
