About The Position

This position is located in the Cumberland County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads. Routinely operates at least two pieces of Category B equipment in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials; snow and ice operations; compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Employee hired in this position is expected to have a working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks, and litter pickup. Additional work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, drainage/ditch maintenance, pipe and drainage structure installation, and flagging operations. Employee in this position is expected to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain
  • Exposure to extreme temperature conditions
  • Lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly
  • Exerting up to 100lbs of force occasionally
  • Subject to emergency callback
  • May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date
  • Possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR obtain North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License through on-the-job training within 360 days of hire date
  • Sign release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06
  • Safety toe footwear required
  • Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and (3) three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR obtain the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License through on-the-job training within 360 days of the date of hire

  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
