This position performs skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways, operating motorized highway maintenance equipment. Responsibilities include making major and minor repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures, as well as maintaining equipment through cleaning, lubrication, and fluid level checks. The role may involve exposure to hazardous conditions and inclement weather. Additional duties include flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with progression dependent on hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for extensive road maintenance, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime, sometimes without prior notice.
