Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief - McDowell County
About The Position
The Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief will report to the McDowell County Headquarters. The selected applicant, under limited supervision, will act as a working crew leader, leading a crew participating in the maintenance and repair of highways. Investigate citizen complaints to determine the repairs and materials needed. Participates in meetings to determine the assignment of crew members to daily projects and oversees the completion of work. Completes reports concerning time, materials, and inspection of work done. Will be required to become certified on one or more of the following types of equipment: hydraulic crane, grader, bulldozer, backhoe, track/rubber-tire excavator, or welding unit. May be exposed to inclement weather and hazardous working conditions. Performs other related duties as required. The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. In the area of assignment of Crew Chief, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment. Pay Grade 12H Tier 4 hourly rate: $25.8713
Requirements
- Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway construction or roadway maintenance, or in bridge or structural steel construction comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
- Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
- Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
- Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
- Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
- Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
- Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
- Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
- Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
- Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
- Ability to climb high steel structures.
- Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
- Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
- In the area of assignment of Crew Chief, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

- Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.
Responsibilities
- Leads a crew of transportation workers and participates in the maintenance and repair of highways.
- May lead a crew of sign shop employees in the fabrication, location, installation, and repair of highway signage.
- Investigate citizen complaints on roads and inspect highways to determine needed repair work.
