About The Position

This position performs full-level repairs and preventative maintenance on transportation vehicles and all types of highway equipment. Responsibilities include minor overhaul of gasoline or diesel-powered equipment engines, vehicle diagnostics and troubleshooting, replacement of various components, and routine services. The role involves inspecting vehicles for compliance with state regulations and assisting higher-level mechanics. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with progression dependent on hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment for this assignment.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as an automotive mechanic servicing either gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles or equipment.
  • Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades.
  • Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
  • Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Responsibilities
