About The Position

The Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator in this position has various reporting locations across the state. The selected applicant, under general supervision, performs full performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. This position will be on our Bridge Heavy Maintenance Crew. Duties include operating motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, asphalt distributor, roller, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem axle truck, trench machine, and snowplow. May operate various other highway equipment as training permits. Making major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures. Making minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters. Responsible for maintaining equipment maintenance including but not limited to cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels. Flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. Other responsibilities may include cleaning vehicles. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performing other duties as required. Statewide weekly OVERNIGHT TRAVEL REQUIRED. Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required. Performs other project related work as required. This position WILL NOT report to Operations Division Charleston Headquarters. It is a STATEWIDE position and will require weekly statewide travel. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required. Pay Grade 11H Tier 1 hourly rate: $17.5313

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
  • A valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
  • No Substitutions for the Equipment Operator CDL requirement.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades.
  • Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
  • Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.

  • Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment.

Responsibilities

  • Operating heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater.
  • Cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels.
  • Repairing and constructing various culvert types.
  • Patching cement, pavement and bridge decks.
  • Sealing joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
  • Cleaning equipment and workshop.
  • Transporting fuel to equipment.
