This position is classified-exempt and "at will" and will be located in District 4, which includes Doddridge, Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Preston, and Taylor counties. Under general supervision, the Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator will perform entry-level functions in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties involve driving light trucks and vehicles for regular operations, snow removal, and ice control (SRIC). The role requires operating various equipment such as fork trucks, end loaders, skid steers, rollers, utility tractors, and brush chippers, as well as various hand tools. Responsibilities may include answering telephone and radio calls during SRIC, transporting materials or fuel, and providing traffic control by flagging on job sites. Selected applicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program and must obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within 6 months of employment. Progress and advancement depend on hours completed, proficiency, training, and maintaining a CDL. The WVDOT is responsible for over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, sometimes without prior notice.
