This is an entry-level, classified-exempt, and at-will position within the District Heavy Maintenance Department. The role involves performing entry-level functions in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties include driving light trucks/vehicles for regular operations and snow/ice control, operating various equipment like forklifts, end loaders, skid steers, rollers, utility tractors, and brush chippers, and using hand tools. The position may also involve answering telephone and radio calls during snow/ice control, transporting materials or fuel, and providing traffic control by flagging. Selected applicants will be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather and will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Advancement depends on completed hours, proficiency, training, and obtaining/maintaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The WVDOT maintains over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime, sometimes without prior notice. A CDL will be required within six months of employment.
