About The Position

The Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator will report to the Fayette County Maintenance Headquarters, Lookout Substation, or the Falls View substation. Under general supervision, the selected employee will perform entry-level functions in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties include driving light trucks or vehicles during regular operations and snow removal/ice control (SRIC), operating various equipment, and providing traffic control. Selected applicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The role includes participation in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with a requirement to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months of employment. Advancement opportunities are dependent on program progress, proficiency, training, and maintaining a CDL. The WVDOT is responsible for over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, sometimes without prior notice.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).

Nice To Haves

  • May fill in answering telephone and radio calls during SRIC.
  • May be responsible for transporting materials or fuel to equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Driving a light truck or vehicle during regular operation as well as during snow removal and ice control (SRIC).
  • Operating various equipment such as a fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, as well as various hand tools.
  • Answering telephone and radio calls during SRIC.
  • Transporting materials or fuel to equipment.
  • Providing traffic control by flagging on job sites.
  • Performing minor maintenance on the fleet of equipment and vehicles.
  • Plowing snow using a light truck.
  • Controlling brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
