About The Position

Michael Baker is seeking a Transportation Technical Manager to join our Chicago, IL team. This leadership role is ideal for a transportation professional with strong technical expertise, project delivery experience, and a passion for mentoring teams. The successful candidate will lead the delivery of roadway and transportation projects for a variety of public-sector clients across Illinois and the Midwest, while supporting business development, client relationships, and technical excellence. Experience with roadway design, transportation infrastructure, and project management is essential.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
10+ years of transportation engineering experience.
Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
Demonstrated experience leading roadway or transportation design projects.
Strong knowledge of IDOT design standards, project delivery processes, and transportation engineering best practices.
Excellent leadership, client management, communication, and team-building skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Nice To Haves

Experience serving as a Technical Manager, Project Manager, or Department Lead within a consulting environment.
Familiarity with OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, and other transportation design software.
Experience delivering projects for IDOT, Illinois Tollway, municipalities, and local agencies.
Design-Build and alternative delivery experience.
Proven success in business development, proposal support, and client relationship management.

Responsibilities

Lead the technical delivery of roadway and transportation projects from planning through final design.
Oversee project quality through QA/QC reviews of plans, specifications, reports, and cost estimates.
Manage project teams, schedules, budgets, and staff utilization to ensure successful project execution.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers.
Develop scopes of work, fee estimates, and support proposal pursuits.
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, including IDOT, counties, municipalities, and other transportation agencies.
Support business development efforts and identify opportunities for growth within the Chicago market.
Participate in professional organizations, industry events, and client meetings to strengthen Michael Baker’s presence in the region.
Foster a collaborative team environment focused on quality, innovation, and professional development.
