This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I in the Forsyth County Maintenance Unit. This position performs a wide range of task supervising a crew of subordinates and inmate labor performing various operations related to maintenance activities. This position will calculate quantities of materials needed, document use of labor, equipment and materials used; safely operate and supervise assigned equipment; conduct/document tailgate safety meetings as necessary; and comply/participate in the Unit’s Safety Program. This person will also be responsible for all salt brine production, salt dome storage, outside inventory, loading/unloading pipe and other inventory, and chainsaws and power equipment maintenance and upkeep. This position will oversee other contractors that work on plumbing, electrical, and HVAC. This employee may be utilized to answer/respond to after-hours calls as needed. Additional Expectations: This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Safety-toed shoes required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
  • Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used.
  • Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew.
  • Experience in roadway maintenance and repair in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, snow and ice removal, crack sealing, full depth patching, or pothole patching.
  • Experience in road maintenance and repair, as well as maintenance equipment operation.
  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
