This posting is for an Engineering Technician II position in the Winston Salem 1 Construction Office. This advanced level position will serve as support for higher level engineers in the administration of highway construction contracts. Job duties include, but are not limited to, monitoring contractor’s daily operations; performing and/or reviewing test reports to ensure that all work and materials conform to specifications, plans, and contract documents; performing contract administration duties such as pay record entry/review, materials-received reports, certified payroll review, daily diary review, as-constructed plans preparation, and monthly quantity verification prior to estimate payment; resolving daily constructability issues and troubleshooting problems to mitigate delays to project delivery; assisting other department personnel and contract forces in utility relocation efforts by inspecting and tracking relocation work; anticipating contractual problems and advising engineering staff of the need for plan revisions, supplemental agreements, or other contract adjustments to improve safety, timely delivery, and/or quality of delivered project; and monitoring contractor’s operations to ensure compliance with subcontract agreements and with the contract DBE requirements. This position ensures compliance with NC Sedimentation and Pollution Control Act, and that all work performed in permitted areas is done in accordance with permits. May direct and schedule the work of junior technicians in staking out and inspecting every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to contract documents in a timely and cost-effective manner. Manages all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from higher level engineers. This position will also be directly involved with the leadership, management, counseling, and training of junior technicians, both department and CEI. Effectively communicates and coordinates work with contractors, subcontractors, utility owners, and property owners to minimize delays and disturbances while maximizing progress of the projects. Knowledge and skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite products, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, is required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety-toed shoes are required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

  • Knowledge and skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite products, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, is required.
  • Advanced working knowledge of mathematical functions is required.
  • Must be able to work nights and/or weekends as required by project workload/staffing with fluctuating hours, if needs be on any assigned project within the limits of Division 9.
  • Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.

  • Safety-toed shoes are required.

  • Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with iPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and SharePlus/SharePoint is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge in understanding contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
  • Experience in sampling and testing materials to evaluate acceptance.
  • Working knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, software, and mathematical functions.
  • Experience maintaining and completing standard records, reports, and correspondence.
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups.
