About The Position

Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) work within the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Department of Homeland Security, in Security Operations. They protect air travelers, airports, and aircraft in a courteous and professional manner. Duties may also extend to protecting high-profile events, important figures, and other matters affecting transportation systems. TSOs use screening equipment and technology to detect dangerous objects in baggage, cargo, and on passengers; conduct passenger and property searches, including pat-downs; control terminal entry and exit points; and interact with the public. The work requires sustained attention and sound decisions in a stressful environment with alarms, noise, crowds, time pressure, and potentially disruptive passengers. Officers apply critical thinking and risk-based screening protocols, follow applicable Standard Operating Procedures, and adapt to new information and changing circumstances. The position is based at Redding Municipal Airport in Redding, California. At this airport, the announcement states that only qualified female candidates are currently being considered to meet mission-related staffing needs; applications from male candidates will be accepted but not considered until those needs change. The position requires shift work and may involve irregular hours, nights, holidays, overtime, extended or split shifts, and weekend work. Full-time positions require 40 hours per week. New-hire training requires travel away from the airport of record, potentially for three to six weeks, and other occasional travel may be required. The role has significant physical demands, including squatting, bending, repeatedly lifting and manipulating baggage and other objects weighing approximately 50 pounds, walking up to three miles during a shift, and standing for prolonged periods of up to four hours. Employees may be exposed to potentially lethal devices and dangerous chemicals. Frontline employees may be required to wear TSA-issued personal protective equipment, including surgical masks, face shields, and nitrile gloves. Candidates must qualify through either at least one year of full-time experience in the security industry, aviation screening, or as an X-ray technician, or a high school diploma or recognized equivalency certificate. Employment is contingent on meeting citizenship, age, Selective Service where applicable, screening, medical, background, and other conditions of employment. Employees must maintain required certifications, training, fitness for duty, and eligibility for continued employment.
