About The Position

Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) work within the Transportation Security Administration’s Security Operations to provide courteous and professional security and protection for air travelers, airports, and aircraft. Duties may also extend to securing high-profile events, important figures, and other matters affecting transportation systems. The position involves operating screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo, and on passengers; conducting passenger and property searches; controlling terminal entry and exit points; and interacting with the public. Screening may involve physical contact with passengers, searching bags, and lifting or carrying bags, bins, and property weighing up to 50 pounds. Officers must maintain focus in a stressful environment with noise, crowds, time pressure, and potentially disruptive or angry passengers while making effective decisions in routine and crisis situations. TSOs apply critical thinking and situational judgment to mitigate security threats, including using risk-based screening protocols that vary according to program requirements. They are expected to learn and follow applicable Standard Operating Procedures, behave responsibly and dependably, and adapt to new information or unexpected obstacles. The role includes classroom and on-the-job training, initial certification testing, recurrent and specialized training, and periodic recertification. Mandatory new-hire training requires travel away from the employee’s airport of record, generally for at least three weeks and potentially up to six weeks. This position is at St. George Regional Airport in St. George, Utah. The salary range is $40,736 to $56,844 annually, or $19.52 to $27.24 per hour, including locality pay of 17.06%. The position requires availability for airport-determined shift schedules, which may include nights, holidays, weekends, overtime, extended or changing shifts, and split shifts. Frontline employees may be required to wear TSA-issued personal protective equipment. The work entails exposure to potentially lethal devices and dangerous chemicals.
