About The Position

The City of Asheville is pleased to accept applications from qualified candidates for the position of Transportation Plans Reviewer within the Transportation Department. This position is responsible for reviewing residential and commercial development applications to ensure strict compliance with municipal, state, and federal transportation codes and regulations. The role serves as a primary technical resource for developers, contractors, and the public, recommending solutions for permitting issues.

Requirements

An associates degree in Transportation, Urban Design, or a design-related field, paired with two (2) years of equivalent experience in or related to: Urban design or street design, Site planning or master planning, Environmental and landscape assessment, Street construction, materials, and testing, Ecological and sustainable development (Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.)
Valid North Carolina Driver's License.

Responsibilities

Reviews residential and commercial development and zoning permit applications.
Ensures all submissions adhere to municipal codes, state laws, and federal regulations.
Attends development-related meetings—including Early Assistance, pre-application, Technical Review Committee (TRC), design review, and planning roundtables.
Provides technical assistance and information to developers, property owners, contractors, attorneys, and members of the public regarding transportation codes, standards, and ordinance requirements.
Recommends practical options or solutions to resolve complex permitting and compliance problems.
Conducts site visits and field assessments to investigate permit issues, gather data, perform research, or evaluate physical site conditions.
Utilizes city software applications to process permit applications, enter review comments and revisions, track status, and issue formal approvals or rejections within established local and state deadlines.
Reviews traffic impact studies submitted for development projects meeting specific size or traffic volume thresholds.
Coordinates development reviews and comments across internal City departments and with external agencies such as the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
