About The Position

Michael Baker International is seeking a Transportation Planning Practice Leader to support the growth and diversification of its multimodal and transportation planning services throughout the State of Florida. This position can be located in any of our Florida offices, with Tallahassee preferred. This is an exciting leadership opportunity to work with one of the preeminent transportation planning firms in Florida, focusing on multimodal transportation development and improvement, community outreach, partnership building, and engineering solutions that enhance mobility and strengthen local and regional resiliency. You will collaborate with federal, state, and local governments, as well as transportation agencies, to conduct performance-based planning and develop innovative transportation solutions. The Practice Leader will work with a dynamic and diverse team of certified planners, transportation engineers, urban designers, and environmental scientists to support Michael Baker’s extensive and growing portfolio of transportation, statewide, regional, and urban planning projects and services. You will utilize your expertise to develop corridor planning studies, technical reports, and preliminary (schematic) engineering plans and estimates. This position will work closely with the Business Development team and collaborate with regional and national offices on strategic pursuits, stakeholder engagement, proposal development, and project delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field with 15+ years of transportation planning experience.
  • Knowledge of multimodal transportation planning, alternatives analysis, traffic studies, and preliminary (schematic) engineering.
  • Extensive experience leading corridor planning studies for existing and future transportation facilities.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with clients and stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership ability and success developing business opportunities with existing and prospective clients, particularly within the Florida transportation market.
  • Established relationships with FDOT, metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), regional transportation authorities, and municipal clients.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Florida and/or AICP Certification preferred.
  • FDOT prequalification experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with office and regional leadership to expand Michael Baker’s transportation planning practice with a primary focus on Florida clients, while remaining engaged across the broader Southern Region.
  • Consult with clients to identify transportation needs and determine the scope of studies and investigations required to develop solutions.
  • Advise clients and engineering teams on conceptual alternatives and planning approaches, recommending effective solutions.
  • Ensure project approaches and deliverables align with applicable regulatory requirements and planning standards.
  • Conduct research and prepare technical planning reports and studies.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary project teams to successfully deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Perform a moderate level of travel throughout Florida and the Southern Region.
  • Manage project scopes, schedules, budgets, and resources effectively.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations and pursue leadership opportunities on boards and committees.
  • Identify and pursue business development opportunities that address industry challenges, strengthen Michael Baker’s presence in Florida, and expand our transportation planning services.
  • Lead proposal efforts, interviews, fee development, and contract negotiations for key pursuits.
  • Build strong relationships with managers and technical leaders across the Southern Region and throughout Michael Baker.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop talented professionals to support practice growth.
  • Collaborate with Florida office representatives and Regional Leadership regarding staffing, workshare, mentorship, business pursuits, and quality assurance.
