About The Position

The Transportation Planning Intern provides professional and technical support to the Transportation Planning & Engineering Division. This position offers students practical experience in metropolitan transportation planning, geographic information systems (GIS), data collection and analysis, multimodal transportation planning, engineering support, and public engagement activities. Under the guidance of professional planning staff, the intern assists with transportation planning projects that advance NOACA’s mission and regional planning initiatives while gaining valuable experience in public sector planning.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in: Urban or Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Public Administration, Environmental Studies, Or a closely related field.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Basic understanding of transportation planning principles and multimodal transportation systems.
  • Ability to collect, organize, and analyze quantitative data.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare clear maps, graphics, and technical documents.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet established deadlines.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and commitment to public service.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or other GIS software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Updating and maintaining GIS databases and geospatial information.
  • Creating GIS maps for technical analysis, reports, presentations, and public meetings.
  • Collecting, organizing, validating, and analyzing quantitative data.
  • Preparing charts, graphs, tables, dashboards, and visualizations to communicate technical information.
  • Assisting with field work, including deployment, monitoring, and retrieval of Street Supplies temporary project infrastructure and other transportation data collection equipment.
  • Preparing materials, displays, exhibits, and logistical support for stakeholder meetings, public meetings, workshops, and Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative (TLCI) projects.
  • Recording meeting notes and documenting action items for internal, stakeholder, technical committee, and public meetings.
  • Maintaining project files and assisting with document organization and records management.
  • Participating in division meetings, professional development opportunities, and cross-divisional collaboration.
  • Performing other duties and special projects as assigned.
