Transportation Planner
About The Position
Michael Baker International is seeking a Transportation Planner to join their Alaska team. This role involves helping communities improve transportation, safety, mobility, and quality of life through planning, public engagement, data analysis, and project development. Planners collaborate with local governments, Tribal organizations, regional partners, and state agencies on a variety of projects, from transportation safety plans and corridor studies to grant funding strategies and community development initiatives. The position offers opportunities to work with diverse communities across Alaska and is looking for a curious, organized, and adaptable professional who enjoys problem-solving, working with people, and using data to support meaningful infrastructure and community investments. The position can be based in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or remotely within Alaska, and offers opportunities for career growth through mentorship and hands-on experience.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in planning, Geography, Public Administration, Environmental Studies, Engineering, or a related field.
- 1-3 years of experience in planning, transportation, public engagement, GIS, grant writing, or a related field.
- Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Interest in working directly with communities and stakeholders.
- Willingness to learn, collaborate, and take on new challenges.
- Passion for making a positive impact in Alaska communities.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with GIS, mapping, data visualization, or graphic design tools is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Support transportation, safety, mobility, freight, and community planning projects.
- Gather, analyze, and visualize data to support planning decisions.
- Develop maps, presentations, reports, and public-facing materials.
- Assist with public meetings, workshops, and stakeholder engagement efforts.
- Collaborate with local governments, Tribal organizations, and agency partners.
- Research funding opportunities and support grant applications.
- Participate in field visits and community travel throughout Alaska.
- Support project management, proposal development, and business growth initiatives.
