About The Position

The Public Works Department seeks a Transportation Planner with a genuine passion for transportation who is self-motivated and proactive — ready to take initiative, contribute meaningfully from day one, and bring energy and purpose to their work. The ideal candidate is highly organized, capable of managing multiple concurrent projects with competing deadlines, and adaptable to shifting priorities. The department values individuals who think critically to analyze tradeoffs, anticipate challenges, and develop practical solutions. This person has strong written and oral communication skills, with an ability to translate complex technical concepts and data into clear, accessible language for non-technical audiences. They offer patience and empathy to community members, fostering trust in government.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in planning, transportation engineering, public administration, or a related field.
  • Three years of related staff experience.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation, as required by the position.
  • Ability to meet minimum qualifications as outlined in the job bulletin at the time of submission.
  • Clear, concise, and complete information regarding qualifications in the application, including detailed responses to all supplemental questions.
  • No utilization of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) during any step in the selection process.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree desirable.
  • Possession of a professional certification is preferred.
  • Desired credentials include the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), Professional Transportation Planner (PTP) designation, or other relevant professional planning, engineering, or transportation certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provides a variety of services related to the development, construction, inspection, improvement, and maintenance of the City's infrastructure, including traffic lights, sidewalks, streetlights, and roadways.
  • Manages multiple concurrent projects with competing deadlines.
  • Analyzes tradeoffs, anticipates challenges, and develops practical solutions.
  • Translates complex technical concepts and data into clear, accessible language for non-technical audiences.
  • Fosters trust in government through patience and empathy with community members.

Benefits

  • Salary and Benefits $116,431.56 - $144,651.60 Annually
  • Position is represented by the Management and Professional Employees Association and is covered by the negotiated terms and conditions of that Association's Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
