Requirements

Completion of OSSD (Grade 12) or equivalent.
A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery, preferably within a municipal setting.
Experience operating a grader is required.
Valid DZ Driver's License required.
Clean driver's abstract.
Working knowledge of all applicable legislation, by-laws, and policies related to transportation services in a municipal setting.
Working knowledge of the skilled operation of similar heavy equipment and machinery (grader, rubber tire excavator, backhoe, snow plow) and ability to make minor adjustments and repairs on equipment used.
Ability to operate standard transmissions.
Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment and initiative when dealing with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
Ability to provide timely and courteous customer service.
Good judgment and initiative and the ability to follow directions.
Must be able to work independently and as a member of a team.
Basic computer literacy and Microsoft Office skills.

Nice To Haves

An AZ license would be an asset.
Completion of, or willingness to attend the T. J. Mahony Road School, Construction and Maintenance program.

Responsibilities

Safely maintain public transportation infrastructure, facilities, and equipment for effective road maintenance and construction.
Operate heavy equipment such as plow trucks, graders, backhoes, etc., for road maintenance and waste disposal.
Perform winter road maintenance, including snow plowing and sanding.
Ensure public safety on municipal lands by removing ice, rubbish, tree limbs, or other debris and properly disposing of waste.
Adhere to safe construction practices (gravel placement, dust reduction, traffic control) under the direction of the Foreman and Supervisor of Operations.
Perform or support road patrols to assess road conditions and maintenance needs.
Respond to emergency calls (e.g., storms, accidents) to restore roads to pre-emergency conditions.
Report and record asset maintenance needs or repairs to the team leader or manager.
Assist with the maintenance of asset inventories and databases.
Construct and maintain Municipal trail networks.
Maintain equipment to ensure it is in good operational condition and safe for use.
Communicate with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
Complete site logs as required.
Assist other departments as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with corporate objectives.
Develop and maintain good working relationships with Council, staff, and the public.
Comply with all office and maintenance shop procedures.
Attend meetings and training when required.
Participate in the resolution of delivery service issues.
Communicate ideas, suggestions, and procedural changes that may assist the organization.
Assist where and when needed during staff shortages and/or emergency situations.
Respond to and/or redirect public inquiries and/or complaints to the Director.
Work safely within the law and safe work practices/procedures.
Immediately report unsafe acts, conditions, or contraventions of the OHSA to a supervisor, the JHSC, or a Health & Safety representative.
Maintain a clean, orderly work area and avoid any unsafe or disruptive behavior.
Complete all assigned health and safety training and take the health and safety of themselves and others seriously.
