About The Position

The Transportation Operations Analyst evaluates, optimizes, and supports the daily movement of goods across a complex food distribution network, with a primary focus on routing, route design, and operational efficiency for a fleet of 27+ drivers supporting pickups, deliveries, various food bank events. This role is expected to exercise sound judgement, manage competing operational priorities, and translate data into practical decisions that improve service, compliance, and distribution efficiency. Working closely with the Transportation and Operations leadership, the Transportation Operations Analyst identifies opportunities, recommends solutions, and drives execution in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the design, maintenance, and continuous improvement of route plans and delivery schedules for 27+ drivers to balance service levels, cost, and driver hours.
  • Creates efficient route patterns (fixed routes, dynamic routes, and mixed models) for pickups from suppliers and deliveries to partners, mobile pantry sites, grocery rescue sites, etc. accounting for time-windows, vehicle capacity, perishability, traffic patterns, and driver shift constraints.
  • Runs route optimization algorithms and modeling (e.g., VRP variants) to minimize total miles, labor hours, and deadhead while ensuring timely deliveries and regulatory compliance.
  • Supports the Transportation Manager in the planning of Healthcare and Government Commodity home deliveries.
  • Collects and analyzes GPS, telematics, delivery exception, and order data to identify bottlenecks and opportunities to reduce cost and improve service.
  • In conjunction with Transportation leadership, creates KPIs and dashboards (on-time delivery, route miles per stop, stops per hour, fuel/CO2 per route, dwell time).
  • Produces reporting, interprets analysis, and presents actionable recommendations to Operations leadership.
  • Conducts scenario analysis (volume spikes, new task onboarding, facility changes) to quantify impacts on driver utilization and route structure.
  • Collaborates with transportation supervisors, drivers, warehouse, sourcing and partner support teams to implement optimized routes and incorporate real-world feedback.
  • Trains transportation supervisors on new routing tools and technology for optimizing and executing daily operations.
  • Identifies and implements process changes to cut costs (fuel, overtime, deadhead) while protecting food safety/quality and service.
  • Leads pilot projects and evaluates results for route consolidation, Hub concepts and strategies to improve network density and reduce overall route redundancy and duration.
  • Works closely with the Transportation leadership on vehicle mix recommendations (capacity, refrigeration needs) to match route profiles.
  • Maintains telematics data for ELD [Electronic Logging Device], GPS system. E.g. review and resolve unassigned miles with minimal oversight.
  • Manages and configures route optimization software, (E.g. Samsara, Verizon Reveal), TMS/WMS integrations, and telematics platforms; validate data integrity.
  • Support maintaining Leased vehicle portal information.
  • Ensures route design adheres to driver hours-of-service (HOS), vehicle weight/permit restrictions, food safety transit requirements, and local regulations.
  • Incorporates driver safety and product temperature control requirements into routing and scheduling.
  • Implements all the above through the transportation supervisors.
  • Other related assignments as needed.
