About The Position

The Northwest School (the school) is an independent day and boarding school. We serve students in grades 6 to 12 on an urban campus in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. Position Summary: This exempt position oversees all transportation needs and activities of the School, including oversight of the School’s 14 vehicle fleet and supervision of all the School bus drivers. The Transportation Manager reports to the Director of Finance and Operations.

Requirements

  • Must have valid WA State Commercial Drivers License (CDL) - Class B or higher with School Bus, Air Brake and Passenger endorsements.
  • High school diploma and minimum of seven (7) years licensed driving experience, with three (3) years of commercial driving experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must have at least three (3) years of experience supervising drivers, preferably in a school environment.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must understand and keep current on DOT regulations.
  • Demonstrated skill with computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), internet research, and the aptitude and willingness to learn new software programs as needed.
  • Current WA State driving abstract required with no serious traffic infractions in the past five years.
  • Current DOT physical card or ability to pass a WA State Department of Licensing physical.
  • Must be willing to participate in and pass a drug screen, both pre-employment and random, as required by the DOT and the School throughout the period of employment.
  • Must have a flexible schedule and be able to work as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience providing transportation services to the public helpful.
  • Previous fleet management experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all School drivers and maintain high level of customer service.
  • Monitor driver performance by completing yearly evaluations for all drivers.
  • Periodically evaluate and identify drivers for re-training as necessary.
  • Manage traffic infractions and apply policies.
  • Identify and execute transportation strategy in anticipation of the School's evolving transportation needs, including environmental concerns.
  • Manage weekly schedule to ensure adequate driving coverage for school needs; distribute schedule to Athletic Director, drivers, and other appropriate parties, providing updates as needed.
  • Identify need for supplemental vehicles during peak activity seasons; schedule charter bus services as needed.
  • Confirm and schedule faculty transportation requests; maintain communication with faculty regarding field trip changes and procedures; ensure appropriate student transportation to and from scheduled activities as needed.
  • Manages the School’s fleet of 14 vehicles (twelve school buses and two vans), including: a) research and purchase recommendations for new vehicles; b) safe and legal parking arrangements for current vehicles; c) maintenance scheduling and documentation; d) DOT vehicle certifications; and e) fueling, cleaning, and repair scheduling of vehicles.
  • Train and orient new drivers on driving procedures, including communicating safety issues, Federal DOT regulations, and the School's policies regarding safe vehicle operation.
  • Manage transportation needs for Summer Camp Program including forecasting staffing and bus needs, hiring driving staff, ensuring driving coverage.
  • Create and administer budget and yearly operating expenses for the Transportation Department.
  • Manage driver hiring process, including identifying openings and interviewing/selecting final candidates.
  • Act as the School Administrator responsible for all software platforms employed by the School to manage all transportation activities including BusHive, Samsara, Edulog, Embark, Concentra and Clearing House.
  • Supervise student led environment team responsible for cleaning buses and complete student evaluations each school term.
  • Other duties as assigned.
