About The Position

The Manager, Transportation - SSA ensures the Transportation department maintains a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost. The role manages personnel and efficient transportation operations through the associates they lead, supporting safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers. The position oversees drivers and Transportation associates, promotes compliance with safety and legal requirements, and works to meet production, service, and cost goals. The role may spend significant time on the road and must spend part of the working time in a truck with drivers, where noise and vibration may exceed levels typical in passenger cars. The position also includes office work using a computer and requires approximately 10% travel, typically for mandatory meetings or training. The role may receive an annual incentive plan bonus. The expected base rate is $60,000–$100,000, depending on relevant experience or education, skills, function, location, and other applicable factors.

Requirements

At least three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
At least one year of experience overseeing a workforce.
Broad knowledge of transportation/delivery operations, methods, and procedures.
Strong leadership, communication, and people-development skills.
Strong understanding of DOT requirements.
Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
High school diploma or GED.
Ability to travel 10%, typically for mandatory meetings and/or training.
Ability to perform the physical activities and demands listed in the posting, including occasional standing, walking, lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds, pushing/pulling, climbing/balancing, stooping/squatting, kneeling, bending, reaching, twisting, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity; frequent driving a vehicle and sitting.

Responsibilities

Champion safety procedures, processes, and training to maintain a safety-first culture and help keep associates, customers, and the public injury-free.
Coach, train, and develop drivers and Transportation associates on job duties, policies, procedures, safety, and legal responsibilities; assist with problem resolution.
Discuss associate performance with Sr. Transportation Managers and create plans to address performance gaps.
Encourage upward communication and motivate associates to achieve department goals and objectives.
Direct and supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical associates; promote engagement, retention, and a culture embodying US Foods values.
Participate in interviewing and hiring Transportation personnel with Sr. Transportation Managers; review performance, coach on service and safety targets, and deliver disciplinary action.
Monitor production goals and accuracy to support customer satisfaction; troubleshoot delivery problems and implement cost-effective, legal solutions.
Ensure the team understands and adheres to DOT regulations.
Identify and stop waste, and improve processes to complete work more safely and efficiently.
Conduct routine Safety and Driver Meetings.
Oversee maintenance of driver qualification files.
Investigate accidents, maintain an accident file, track causes, and take appropriate preventative action.
Schedule working shifts effectively using appropriate planning tools, such as Microsoft Excel.
Perform other duties assigned by the manager.
