About The Position

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking experienced agency employees for the position of Transportation Maintainer 4 (Backhoe Operator) in Vernon. This role involves safely operating a Backhoe and other heavy equipment, performing daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment within the District 1 area. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, with a first shift from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Requirements

Current State of Connecticut employee of the agency listed for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service.
Possess and maintain a current CDL Class A or B with tank endorsement.
Possess and maintain a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC).
Willingness to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever services are needed, including mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.
Willingness to stay at work for the duration of storm events, which may include holidays and weekends, potentially for several days.
30-mile residency from the posted job location.
Three (3) years of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadways, roadsides, bridges or airports, involving the operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in the operation of complex equipment or the performance of skilled tasks (interpreted at the level of a Transportation Maintainer 3 for state employees).

Ability to operate skillfully and make ordinary repairs to highly complex mechanical equipment.
Ability to utilize computer software.
Adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
Willingness to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.

Responsibilities

Safely operate the Backhoe and other heavy equipment in accordance with safety guidelines.
Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment.
Accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal.
Operate and maintain highly complex mechanical equipment.
Perform a variety of highly skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadways, roadsides, bridges, airports, and other departmental facilities.
Operate trucks such as low bed type trailer tractor, hydraulic platform crane, tractor trailer with tilt trailer or dump trailer, center line marking machine, ten-wheel truck with tank, track-mounted skid steer with various attachments including Backhoe, Miller, and Forestry, glycol vacuum scrubber, payloader with snow pusher, airfield deicing truck, and double wing truck.
Operate equipment including motor graders, loader/backhoe, loader mounted snow blower, snow broom, and liquid asphalt application/joint sealing machine.
Perform duties such as backhoe operation, post pounder operation, Vactor operation, welding, lead person in boundary stone setting, lead person in test borings, lead Vendor in Place (VIP) inspector, and trainer.
Perform highly skilled tasks in areas such as construction, maintenance, mechanical repair, carpentry, masonry, welding, plumbing, painting, highly skilled tree climbing, and sign erecting requiring complex rigging.
Operate Center Line Marking Machine (Rear Switch Operator).
Serve as District Equipment Coordinator/Radio Room operator (lead).
Serve as District Projects Records Coordinator.
Serve as Multi-Media First Aid Trainer.
Serve as Highway Operations Center System Operator.
Act as crew leader.
Supervise a materials management stockroom.
Perform wildlife hazard control.
Perform radio monitoring and communication.
Escort vendors, contractors, etc. in secure areas (state-owned airports only).
Receive training in, stand by for, and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state-owned airports.
Perform related duties as required.
