About The Position

As a Transportation Equipment Operator A with the Department of Transportation, you will help keep Northumberland County moving. This position allows you to operate equipment, support road crews, and take part in work that benefits your community. This position supports daily highway and bridge maintenance through skilled equipment operation and hands-on labor. You will play an important role in keeping roads safe for the public and ensure that maintenance projects run smoothly.

Requirements

  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • This position requires that the E restriction is removed.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) ; or Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School ; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Nice To Haves

  • Employees must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • Employees are required to obtain additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.

Responsibilities

  • Operate trucks, loaders, and other machinery needed for maintenance activities
  • Perform manual labor using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, saws, and jack hammers
  • Carry out flagging duties to support safe work zones during maintenance operations
  • Complete daily pre and post operation checks and perform minor repairs and adjustments
  • Follow safety procedures, use protective equipment, and report hazards or incidents immediately
  • Implement environmental protection requirements for maintenance work activities
