PSI is looking for a curious, motivated Transportation Engineer to join our team at our Navy Yard office. Working under the guidance of licensed Professional Engineers, you will help plan and design improvements to DC streets and public spaces. You will split your time between the office and the field, and you will see your work built in neighborhoods across the local area. You will be directly involved in high-visibility DDOT projects that shape how people move through DC, with mentorship from experienced engineers and support on your path to PE licensure. While much of our work is in the District, you will also have the opportunity to support projects for local municipalities and state DOTs.

Requirements

• 0- 2+ years of experience performing traffic engineering related tasks
• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field, with coursework or interest in transportation
• Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, or the ability to pass it within 12 months of hire
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Clear written and verbal communication skills
• Valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

• Internship experience in traffic or transportation engineering, ideally in an urban setting
• Familiarity with MicroStation or AutoCAD, GIS, Synchro, Vissim, HCS, or AutoTurn
• Exposure to the MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, AASHTO guidelines, NACTO Urban Street Design Guide, or the DDOT Design and Engineering Manual
• Interest in Vision Zero, Complete Streets, or urban mobility innovation
• Involvement in professional organizations such as ITE, ASCE, WTS, or ASHE

Responsibilities

• Assist in producing transportation design plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) packages across disciplines including temporary traffic control, traffic signals, utilities, signing, pavement markings, roadways, and lighting
• Support traffic engineering studies, analysis, and modeling for intersections and corridors, with a focus on pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and drivers alike
• Contribute to urban design and innovation work such as protected bike lanes, pedestrian and ADA accessibility improvements, traffic calming, curbside management, and streetscape improvements
• Conduct field visits, collect and organize traffic data, and assess existing safety and operational conditions
• Assist with technical memos, reports, and presentations that meet client standards
• Help translate technical findings for community members, agency staff, and other non-technical audiences
