About The Position

This role involves designing improvements on Connecticut's highway system, impacting safety, traffic operations, and local community quality of life. Positions are available throughout the Bureau of Engineering and Construction at the DOT Headquarters in Newington, CT. Current students graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering by May 2027 are encouraged to apply. Trainees receive on-the-job training, work with experienced engineers, and contribute to providing a safe and efficient transportation system. Responsibilities include implementing bicycle, pedestrian, and complete streets improvements, engaging in stakeholder outreach, collaborating with various CTDOT design units, and gaining experience for professional licensing. The role involves resolving complex transportation challenges and offers diverse working conditions with both office and field work. Trainees will utilize computer-aided design software (MicroStation) and applications like Microsoft Word and Excel.

Requirements

• Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
• Must be available to travel for training, conferences, meetings, field reviews, etc.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required and must be maintained.
• Knowledge of basic transportation engineering theories, principles and methods.
• Skill in use of drafting and calculating instruments and other computer applications.
• Considerable ability in performing mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details.

Nice To Haves

• Current students who will be graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering by the end of May 2027.
• Possession of an accredited bachelor’s degree in civil engineering by May 2027.
• Possession of an accredited engineering degree in a position-relevant area for specialty positions (i.e., electrical engineering for position in Electrical Engineering) by May 2027.
• Transportation engineering course work and knowledge of transportation engineering concepts.
• Minimum 3.0 grade point average in relevant engineering courses.
• Engineer in Training (EIT) licensure.
• Experience working as part of a collaborative team.
• Related engineering work experience or internship.
• Experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Access.
• Experience with CAD or similar engineering-related software.
• Oral and written communication experience.
• Report writing and presentation experience.
• Experience with multitasking and managing large workloads.

• Performing a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during the course of the training period.
