About The Position

This position serves as the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) statewide ancillary structures specialist and consultant deputy project manager. Ancillary structures include retaining walls, sound walls, cantilever signs, truss signs, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) structures, lighting towers, non-frangible and frangible lights, strain poles, mast arms, culverts, wood poles, and traffic signals. This position serves as the statewide specialist for ancillary structures for asset management. This includes making strategic recommendations including key performance indices, condition forecasting and funding needs, and life cycle cost analysis tools for capital planning. This position oversees research projects, special studies, policy document updates, risk assessments, and training. Reviews preliminary and final plans associated with ancillary structure, road, and bridge design projects and performs complex assignments requiring knowledge of structural capabilities, limitations, and proper applications of materials related to design, inspection, and inventory. Manages consultants for innovative consultant contracts including Ancillary Structure Program Manager Consultant Contract. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license to perform quality control reviews and provide direction to various work groups for projects including specifications, special provisions, and supplemental specification for various highway projects related to ancillary structure design, inspection, and inventory development.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
  • Four years of professional experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including two years equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11 or one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 12 or Transportation Engineer Licensed 12.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and must maintain throughout employment in the position.
  • Possession of a registered professional engineering license as required by the State of Michigan and must maintain throughout employment in the position.
