About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking multiple skilled Transportation Engineers to join their South Central Region team in Union Gap, WA. In this role, you will help shape the future of Washington's transportation system by delivering safe, practical, and cost-effective roadway improvements that enhance mobility and protect the traveling public. You will work both independently and as part of a collaborative team of engineers and technicians, developing plans, specifications, and estimates for a variety of transportation projects, ensuring compliance with state standards, regulations, and engineering best practices.

Requirements

Demonstrated understanding of civil, structural, geotechnical, or transportation engineering principles, typically acquired through formal education or equivalent on-the-job experience (e.g., experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 1).
Ability to apply engineering concepts to real-world scenarios.
Skilled in reading, analyzing and interpreting contract plans, specifications, manuals and other WSDOT documents in accordance with project requirements and engineering standards.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to a variety of stakeholders including engineers, contractors, and the public.
Proficient in the use of engineering technology, including computer-aided drafting (CAD) and other engineering software applications used for design, analysis, and documentation.
Valid driver's license and demonstrated ability to independently travel to and between project and meeting sites, safely operate state-owned vehicles, and transport agency-owned survey equipment and tools required to perform field duties and related project activities.

Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

Nice To Haves

Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or a degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, traffic engineering, or a closely related field.
Demonstrated knowledge of transportation engineering principles and practices with experience supporting one or more functional areas such as roadway design, construction, traffic engineering, materials, program management, or other transportation-related disciplines.
Demonstrated ability to effectively use engineering and business software to support project development, design, scheduling, analysis, and communication.
Experience using applications such as OpenRoads (CADD), Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel) to produce accurate, organized, and professional work products.

Responsibilities

Prepare Plans, Specification, and Estimate packages for projects assigned to the design team.
Prepare cost estimates.
Prepare contract provisions including writing special provisions.
Operate OpenRoads software to create computer-aided engineering deliverables required for plan production.
Performs the most complex automated plans drafting.
Coordinate with a team of technicians, interns or consultants to prepare deliverables needed for projects to meet established milestone dates.
Instruct and direct support staff/consultants in preparation of quantities, estimates, grades, elevations, maps, plans, profiles, cross sections, details, structural notes and beginning level design.
Prepare memorandums and letters for correspondence.
Prepare Basis of Design documentation, Basis of Estimate documentation, Design Documentation Packages and other required design documents in accordance with the Design Manual.
Provides in-depth Review of Contract Plans, Specifications, and Estimates.
Lead team in preparing for and conducting meetings as needed for projects.
