About The Position

ERG's Clean Transportation Group is seeking a Transportation Data Scientist to join our dynamic team focused on the analysis and modeling of activity and emissions of on-road vehicles as well as off-road sources. Responsibilities include analyzing and interpreting large transportation-related datasets, conducting emissions modeling to assess policy impacts, developing and supporting custom software and database applications to support client needs, communicating ERG’s work to technical and policy audiences, and interfacing directly with clients. Ideal candidates will have a minimum of two years of direct experience developing and supporting analytical tools, conducting vehicle emissions modeling, and engaging with stakeholders at local, national, and international levels. The candidate should have direct experience programming with Python SQL, and R; working with software platforms including GitHub, Azure DevOps, ArcGIS, Anaconda, Tableau; and using the EPA MOVES and FAA Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT) models.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years experience working directly with transportation-related data and models
  • Demonstrated experience in transportation emissions modeling (e.g., EPA MOVES, FAA AEDT) and data analysis
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and R; experience with web tool development and GIS scripting
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with experience drafting technical reports and presenting findings
  • Experience working with large, complex datasets and developing automated data pipelines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting policy development or technical working groups in transportation or environmental sectors
  • Familiarity with economic and environmental modeling, cost-effectiveness analysis, and stakeholder engagement
  • Experience working directly with government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs)

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance transportation emissions modeling tools and resources for use at global, national, and state/local scales
  • Analyze large transportation activity and emissions datasets using Python, SQL, and R and other applications to support research and policy initiatives
  • Design and implement web-based dashboards and to communicate results and support decision-making by federal, state and local policymakers
  • Conduct emissions and air quality scenario analyses of emissions reduction measures using EPA’s MOVES model
  • Lead or support user-testing sessions, gather feedback, and iterate on tool design and functionality
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and manage relationships with project sponsors
  • Document and present results of analyses and project tasks to clients and technical audiences in workshops and forums
  • Support other Clean Transportation Group projects as needed
