About The Position

The UDOT Planning Division is seeking a visionary Data Analyst to revolutionize our transportation insights. In this high-impact role, you will transform complex datasets into clear, actionable solutions that shape Utah's future. You will lead the charge in modernizing our prioritization models and socioeconomic data development processes (for travel demand models), leveraging systems thinking to create innovative, future-proof technical processes. Beyond modeling, you'll have the possibility to drive statewide progress by supporting diverse initiatives, including the long range transportation plan and corridor studies, ensuring your work has a lasting legacy across Utah's transportation landscape.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in urban planning, civil or transportation engineering, data or computer science, information systems, geography, or a related field, along with four (4) years of directly relevant professional experience. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling eight (8) years will be considered.
  • Proficient use of Excel/Google Sheets for workflows and visualization, plus proficiency or strong interest in SQL, R, Python, SPSS, or BigQuery.
  • Strong technical writing skills for documentation and reports, with an ability to create clear, visually appealing graphics for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to process transportation datasets, draw actionable conclusions, and communicate findings to internal teams, agencies, and consultants.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with software like CUBE, TransCAD, or ActivitySim to forecast future traffic volumes.
  • Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS (MXD, Pro, and Online) to analyze data and create maps, interactive webmaps, and story maps.
  • Experience using platforms like BigQuery or vendors like StreetLight to support transportation analysis.
  • Prior experience working with data from UDOT or partner agencies (e.g., UGRC, UTA, WFRC).

Responsibilities

  • Performing analyses of transportation data and projects.
  • Developing and maintaining extensive database programs to organize collected data for analysis.
  • Creating custom data dashboards and visualization tools with new and existing data.
  • Developing the data for and running a spreadsheet-based model for the UDOT capacity project prioritization process.
  • Updating data needed to develop and apply travel demand models, primarily the socioeconomic datasets.
  • Developing the data for and running the Python-based socioeconomic data pipeline to create the socioeconomic data for the travel demand models.
  • Reviewing and post-processing travel demand model outputs.
