About The Position

Step into a role where every mile matters! As a Transportation Construction Inspector with the Department of Transportation, you help keep major projects moving safely and smoothly across the region. This role focuses on inspecting highway construction work to ensure it meets approved plans and standards. You will support project progress and quality by checking materials, workmanship, documentation, and field conditions.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job titles or equivalent Federal Government job titles, as determined by the Office of Administration); or One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
  • Meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect phases of transportation construction work and verify compliance with approved standards and specifications
  • Check placement of cement concrete, bituminous concrete, drainage materials, and other construction materials
  • Assist with checking grades, elevations, and roadway or structure stake-out work
  • Conduct visual compaction tests of soils, aggregates, and sub-surface layers
  • Complete diary entries, calculations, estimates, and other required project records
  • Interact with staff, agencies, legislators, and the public to support effective project administration

Benefits

  • Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $46,827.00 (before taxes).
