About The Position

As a Transportation Construction Inspector with the Department of Transportation, you help ensure that permit projects follow the rules and support safe transportation. You take part in field reviews, coordinate with experts, and help keep construction activities on track. This role focuses on reviewing Highway Occupancy Permits, conducting field inspections, and ensuring that permit activities follow department standards. You will work with engineers, companies, and the public while helping keep transportation projects safe and compliant.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
  • Meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Be able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Review assigned permit applications and field conditions for accuracy and compliance with department regulations
  • Coordinate with engineers and other units to confirm drainage, safety, geometric design, and construction requirements
  • Gather existing roadway conditions and assist with documentation for major permit projects such as utility installations
  • Research existing permits to verify that current site conditions match approved permit information
  • Report non compliant field conditions and issue citations or warning letters to permit offenders as required
  • Collect and test construction materials to ensure they meet contract standards
