About The Position

The Transport Aide performs activities related to transportation of patients and lifting assistance of patients as directed. May run errands, transport supplies, equipment, loose traction, reprocessed items, and assist with cleaning related duties. The Transport Aide assesses all transfer orders for safety considerations, including techniques and level of assistance needed, acting as a resource and support to the nursing care team.

Requirements

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent preferred
  • Completion of a Nursing Assistant program, Emergency Medical Technician, Home Health Aide program or transport related program preferred
  • 1 year (1040 hours) or more of documented previous experience as a Nursing Assistant, Hospital Technician, Emergency Room Technician, patient care transport position in an acute care setting, or one year of experience in Environmental Services Department at Marin General Hospital.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire.
  • Integrative Agitation Management (IAMTAC) required within 30 days of hire.
  • Knowledge of proper usages of body mechanics or lifting techniques and equipment related to safe movement and transfer of patients
  • Ability to read, speak, write, understand and follow English verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to establish priorities and maintain a calm demeanor while working in an atmosphere of conflicting demands
  • Ability to communicate clearly, work tactfully and effectively with patients, visitors, physicians, team members and other hospital staff
  • Ability to effectively utilize current in-house computer system
  • Ability to write clearly and legibly
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and contribute positively towards the goals of the team and the organization
  • Employees in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or service based on the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to calls/pages in a timely manner, i.e., immediately if “Stat” and all others within ten (10) minutes, letting caller know the priority status of the call and estimated time of arrival
  • Assesses the type of transport required, timing, equipment to be utilized, level of assistance needed for any additional staff, prior to safely initiating a transport
  • Assists care team with patients into or out of bed or to/from transport devices to/from bed/chair, utilizing a team approach and good body mechanics
  • Pushes and pulls wheelchairs, gurneys or beds occupied by patients in a safe, timely and efficient manner
  • Assures that all lifting devices are maintained in an orderly and sanitary condition; maintains transport equipment, and promptly pulls any unserviceable equipment out of services and delivers it to engineering for repair, reporting all unsafe conditions to supervisor in a timely manner
  • Legibly and accurately tracks the number of transports per shift by recording, completing and tallying the daily tracking form and submitting it to the coordinator at the end of the shift
  • Cycle cleans gurneys and wheelchairs using a detergent disinfectant
  • Routinely inspects utility rooms for removal of used sequential sleeves to Sterile Processing
  • Adheres to downtime activities list between Guest Transport Calls
  • Provides postmortem support for transport to morgue
  • Maintains morgue per policy and adheres to cycle cleaning schedule for refrigerator cleaning
  • Strategically positions wheelchairs and gurneys throughout shift
  • Monitors and removes loose and excess traction equipment from service elevator areas and equipment rooms
  • Performs errands (i.e. Medical Records, Blood Bank, Dumbwaiter) for clinical and ancillary units
  • Assumes lead role in determining most effective approach in use of specialized lift equipment
  • Monitors oxygen cylinders for proper level of oxygen. Replaces as necessary
  • Assist with routine cleaning and discharge cleaning of the patient environments
  • May assist patient care providers with basic patient care i.e. setting up food trays, assisting with making beds/gurney’s, assist with ambulation of patients
  • Other duties as assigned
