About The Position

This position is for the role of a Modeling Engineer in the Ratings & Configuration (R&C) team within the Transmission System Operations Engineering (TSOE) organization. The role entails supporting the activities necessary to ensure compliance with applicable NERC and industry standards related to configuration changes to the transmission grid. Expected activities include but are not limited to: Accurately model transmission system topology including impedance and facility ratings for lines, stations, and transformers for medium, high, and extra-high voltages using AEP-internal modeling databases. Fulfill various system modeling related requests from Engineering and Operations personnel and submitted via ServiceNow ticketing system. Collaborate with others internal/external to the team to model planned projects, representing the future transmission system, as needed. Perform activities related to NERC Compliance standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination, as preparation for future licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE), is encouraged and preferred.
  • Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology may also satisfy this degree requirement if they obtain a certified Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Has typically acquired 2 or more years of related experience in work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering technology principles; Bachelor's degree in engineering technology in a program accredited by ABET.
  • A degree in engineering technology is the preferred degree: however, engineering degrees will also be considered.
  • Acceptable alternative is (1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering technology (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering technology from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.

  • A degree in engineering technology is the preferred degree: however, engineering degrees will also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately model transmission system topology including impedance and facility ratings for lines, stations, and transformers for medium, high, and extra-high voltages using AEP-internal modeling databases.

  • Assists higher-level engineers in handling well-defined portions of more complex problems and analyses.
  • Coordinates work activities of others as required to resolve routine engineering tasks.
  • Performs work activities as assigned and coached by higher-level employees.
  • Assists and participates in the preparation of reports and technical papers.
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing and presents ideas clearly.
  • Listens to and understands instructions, and requests clarification as required.
  • Develops decision-making skills under guidance of higher-level employees and makes routine decisions subject to review and contributes to team decision-making.
