About The Position

Transload Operators with Cando are responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching services. If you enjoy working outdoors, physical activity, problem solving, and a company that promotes a strong safety culture, this opportunity is for you! Cando provides specialized rail operating services. We provide a wide range of rail services including short line operations, industrial switching, material handling, terminal & transload services, and more. With over 50 operations, we are the 3 largest locomotive fleet in Canada and growing!

Requirements

  • Excellent teamwork skills; strong customer service skills
  • Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings switching lists; read and comprehend policy and procedure manuals
  • Physically fit including the ability to pull self up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, able to lift and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches
  • Ability to work flexible hours at a 24/7 operational site; work outside in all weather conditions
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required certifications and safety critical medical clearance including clear drug and alcohol testing
  • Experience in the rail industry or an industrial environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating trackmobile and locomotive would be an asset

Responsibilities

  • Ensures safe operation of the locomotive/trackmobile and train movements; participates in job and safety briefings to receive communication regarding the daily operation
  • Applies rules, special instructions, and switching procedures while operating as a transload operator or conductor including operating switches and derails, coupling and uncoupling rail cars including air hoses, applying and releasing handbrakes
  • Provides protection of train, track, and equipment
  • Performs equipment inspections and necessary repairs; completes daily inspection and testing of the trackmobile brakes and safety devices
  • Complies with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, the customer, and/or Cando; practices and promotes safe work habits
  • Keeps the interior of equipment and customer site safe, clean, and tidy
  • Performs yard checks and produces yard inventory sheets
  • Promptly reports all safety, equipment, and track problems to the Shift Supervisor and/or Manager; undertakes and tasks assigned by the Shift Supervisor
  • Exerts “best effort” to protect human life, human safety and company property
  • Actively participates with the team and provides excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image
  • Participates in training or company initiatives as required
