About The Position

King County Metro Transit’s Facilities Division has an exciting opportunity for a Transit Utility Laborer. Transit Utility Laborers perform a wide variety of tasks and semi-skilled work throughout the King County Metro Transit service area. Primary areas of work include bus shelter cleaning, landscape/grounds maintenance, and semi-skilled assistance for the skilled trades. About Metro's Transit Facilities Division: King County Metro Transit's Facilities Division maintains all Metro Transit properties, such as bus bases, park & rides, bus shelters, and offices and maintenance shops. Services include bus shelter repairs and replacements, bus shelter cleaning, trolley wire repairs, radio maintenance for buses, environmental spill clean-up, bus sign replacement, graffiti removal, and other facilities maintenance duties. Internally, team provides division-wide support functions for finance, budget, environmental compliance, safety, training, administrative services and new employee orientation. Planning, inventory/materials management, work center, workforce management, functional asset management, general/maintenance agreements, systems support, capital infrastructure, sustainable resources/energy.

Requirements

Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in facility maintenance, specifically those used for landscaping, facility cleaning, and trades support.
Skills and experience in grounds maintenance practices, laboring tasks, and basic trades tasks.
Knowledge of safe lifting/moving practices, occupational hazards, and safety requirements.
Skill in the care and operation of automotive and facility maintenance tools and equipment.
Effective communication skills, including both written and verbal, and the ability to follow instructions.
Ability to provide customer service with excellent interpersonal skills.
Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as working as part of team.
Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions, including inclement weather.
Ability to work at heights of up to 40 feet.
Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.
A valid Washington State driver's license is required and an acceptable driving record. If you possess an out of state driver's license, you must obtain a WA state license within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

One (1) or more years of current or recent experience performing heavy physical labor such as but not limited to: lifting and carrying garbage, poles, lumber, filters, signs, equipment and tools, shoveling dirt and sand, loading and moving wheelbarrows, and raking bark.
Experience working in the road ‘right-of-way’ near moving vehicles and/or equipment.
Experience in the care and use of industrial pressure washers, steam cleaners, mowers, tractors, and other similar equipment.
Experience assisting gardeners in maintaining grounds and lawns.
Experience performing or assisting with basic levels of painting and/or carpentry.
Flagging certification.
Forklift certification.

Responsibilities

Pressure wash passenger shelters located on bus routes; clean, empty trash and remove debris around the shelters; pressure wash, clean, and maintain park-and-ride lots, transit centers, parking garages, maintenance bases, and other similar areas.
Provide immediate response to and clean up unsanitary conditions that may involve bodily fluids using personnel protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Sand streets and remove snow and ice from transit facilities; patch pavement and assist with paving repairs.
Pick up, handle, and haul a variety of heavy materials, trash, and similar items.
Operate a variety of light- and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles, including fleet vehicles, trucks, vans, dump trucks, loaders, personnel lifts, forklifts, snowplows, mowers, tractors, pressure washers, steam cleaners, and other similar equipment.
Assist in grounds maintenance; pick up and haul lawn refuse; mow lawns and remove weeds; dig holds for plantings; perform earth removal and shaping for flower beds and ornamental landscapes; spread landscaping bark; and, trim trees, shrubs, and bushes.
Assist trades personnel in paint preparation and painting; assist carpenters and metal constructors in various wood and metal work projects; clean areas containing oil, grease, and similar materials.
Clean restrooms, shelters and comfort stations; replenish supplies; remove graffiti and clean all surface areas and fixtures.
Move furniture and equipment, haul refuse.
Perform semi-skilled carpentry, painting, facility maintenance, and minor repair duties.
Maintain and clean assigned vehicles and equipment.
Maintain varied records including work performed, time spent, materials used and related information; enter and extract data using automated systems; maintain manual records as required.
