About The Position

The Transit Peace Officer will play a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure, and inclusive environment for all passengers using Edmonton's public transit system. You will be a visible and reassuring presence, responding to a variety of situations with professionalism, compassion, and integrity.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 and completion of a recognized diploma in police studies, security, criminology, sociology, or related field and a minimum of three (3) years of strong customer service or diverse law enforcement experience; -OR- Completion of Grade 12 and a minimum of 5 years of enforcement experience in a diverse security or law enforcement environment; -OR- Two years experience as a Community Peace Officer level 1 in Alberta or a serving Police Officer from a recognized policing or law enforcement environment in Canada, within the past five (5) years
  • Skilled in exercising tact, sound judgment and firmness in dealing with difficult situations and with the public
  • Knowledge of powers of arrest, applicable policies, bylaws, acts, legislation
  • Knowledge and awareness of the Edmonton Transit System
  • Demonstrated understanding of Diversity, Inclusion and Reconciliation principles
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate inclusively and respectfully with diverse community members
  • Ability to use current computer software such as Google Suite, Posse, CAD, Microsoft Office
  • Successful candidates are able to be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Possession of current Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications from an Alberta Government approved First Aid training provider.
  • Candidates are required to complete a pre-employment Physical Ability Requirement Evaluation (PARE) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton prior to employment . This is administered by the City of Edmonton's certified PARE evaluators. This test is provided without charge, and the certificate will be retained by the City.
  • Obtain and retain the Provincial Community Peace Officer I Designation and associated peace officer certifications per the program requirements
  • Must be able to be sworn as a Municipal Bylaw Enforcement Officer
  • Ability to obtain and retain "B" Book qualification on the LRT Rules and Regulations
  • Applicants may be tested

Responsibilities

  • Respond to security emergencies, incidents and general complaints occurring at Edmonton Transit facilities or on Edmonton Transit property
  • Conduct routine preventative patrols on Edmonton Transit property to ensure security and safety of patrons, promptly report any potential or actual risks or losses
  • Address customer service needs by providing transit information (fares, stop locations, etc.), responding to injury reports within transit facilities, and assisting passengers requiring support
  • Foster and maintain respectful relationships with Edmonton's diverse communities, acting as a positive ambassador for the City of Edmonton
  • Exercise discretionary law enforcement powers as granted under federal and provincial legislation and municipal bylaws
  • Collaborate with security professionals, other Peace Officer groups, and the Edmonton Police Service to enhance safety and security within the Edmonton Transit System
  • Support Transit Operations with safe and efficient fare enforcement
  • Collect information and evidence to support court proceedings, insurance claims, and Security and Risk Management activities. Provide testimony or evidence in court when necessary
  • Prepare comprehensive letters and reports, develop and implement special events, and conduct media interviews and public presentations
  • Perform other duties as required
