This is a skilled craft position whereby the incumbent operates commercial passenger vehicles, multi-passenger vans, and ancillary equipment (wheelchair lift, two-way radio) for the purpose of transporting customers with special needs (senior citizens, person with disabilities) to assigned destinations. Para-transit routes are primarily followed; however, fixed routes may be assigned if necessary. The incumbent is evaluated based on the safe and efficient operation of vehicles as relates to the transport of passengers and the quality of services provided to customers. The incumbent must demonstrate a professional, pleasant, courteous, and helpful demeanor towards the public at all times and must be able to maintain composure in stressful situations. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to the elements. Incumbent must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50lbs on a regular basis and must wear and maintain a uniform and safety equipment. Incumbent is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands and finger, handle and feel objects, tools and controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Ability to operate light to heavy duty county vehicles in excess of 26,000 pounds. DPW&T employees are considered "Essential" and are required to participate in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program, during natural and man-made disasters, and during special operations/activities as assigned. Essential employees are expected to report for work or remain at work when other employees are granted Administrative Leave.
